Mash-Up
In
researching for the blog, I found a technology that, though it is not cutting
edge or ‘new,’ its definition is new to me and hopefully to you. The technology is called “Mash-Up.”
The
origination of the phrase comes from the British-West Indies. It is a slang used to refer to someone as
under the influence or drunk.
The
current use of “Mash Up” was adopted by the music industry. It is when you take content from one piece of
music and blend it, merge it or ‘mash (it) up’ with content from another piece
of music. A good example is when Pit Bull
takes a sound bite from an original song previously done in the 80’s or 90’s and
then adds his own unique music and lyrics to create and entirely new piece of
music.
In
relation to the internet, to ‘Mash-Up’ is to take different sources of data or
information and incorporate them into a web page you might be creating. For instance, let’s say I refer to an address
for a location of my business. Instead
of the person having to exit my web page and go to MapQuest and type in the
address, wait for the page to load, et cetera, I can incorporate the MapQuest
link directly into my web page or I can ‘mash(it) up’ into the web page.
Mashing
up a web page not only saves time and money for the developer, but it also
saves time and potentially money for the person using the web page. One simply incorporates all they want the
viewer to see all on one nice and tidy web page.
