Modular Cell Phone
A great new tech that is coming out in the coming years is
the modular cell phone. Instead of the traditional smart phones, these phones
will be able to be fully customized to the users needs and wants. If a better
camera is what you need and you don’t need any speaker you can do it on this
new modular cellphone platform. No more will a consumer need to purchase a
phone to keep up with new technology, in these modular phones, outdated parts
can easily be removed and upgraded.
There are two main companies that are working on this new
technology, PhoneBlocks and Motorola (now Google’s Project Ara).
PhoneBlocks started this idea September of last year (2013) with the social
reach platform Thundercalp.
To date this modular phone idea has reached 979,253 supporters and getting a
social reach of 381,761,319 people. By comparing the two phones it is clear
that Google has run with this idea and will have a beautiful, thin, and
workable device by early January
2015.
The business applications for modular cell phones like this
are endless. Smartphones can be tailored for employees to only do what the
employer wants. For example, a stock person in a department store can have a
red laser to scan items, a loud speaker for easy communication, and a pre
loaded hard drive with only the needed apps and appropriate space. Another
example is a small business can use these as there credit card machine installing
a card reader and printer Wi-Fi block. The applications for both personal and business
with a modular cell phone is only limited by the imagination and building of blocks.
What blocks would you want and why?

Hi Ben,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very interesting. It is amazing to observe the increase in technology. I know the change is going to be awesome because smartphones have come a long way. They have replaced analog phones and beepers. I like this new technology, I can't wait to see it action. I believe Sears has already taken advantage of the use of tablets. All of their sales agents had them as I entered one store. Maybe in the future, I'll witness other companies with this innovative technology. Thanks for your post.

Hi Ben,
ReplyDeleteFor my other class I've been reading about Generation Y and how car companies are creating cars that are customizable in order to meet the wants of this consumer group.
It sounds like Modular Phones and this type of flexibility will fit very nicely into meeting the wants of Generation Y in relation to smart phones.
Thanks for sharing.
