Smart Carts and Impulse Buying

I feel that many of us have heard the phrase 'smart cart' before, but most of us have no idea what this exactly entails. Each cart would have a screen on it that shows popular items, new items, items relevant to the shopper, or even a previous shopping list. The screen can also be a social device as shoppers can see what family, friends, or other shoppers are buying.

Imagine if you were at a grocery store and could immediately pull up a grocery list from last week. Another fascinating idea would be incorporating set-grocery lists. Some companies are exploring sharing celebrity shopping lists, athlete shopping lists, etc. Consumers would certainly spend more if they can buy all the same food and drinks that their favorite in-shape baseball player or skinny actress buys.

This technology offers a wealth of possibilities to stores, brands, and consumers alike. Brands could pay to have their products at the top of the list and consumers can take advantage of coupons offered right on the screen. This would finally eliminate the need to cut out coupons before heading to the store. Although the technology is not quite ready to be implemented in stores, it's imminent arrival is not far-off.

  1. I hadn't heard of this technology before your post. You're absolutely right though, it's fascinating! Thank you for posting about it; I'll be looking out now for sure.

  2. I have never heard of the “smart cart”; but I think it is a great idea. I am in Jewel’s a couple of times a week and Wal-Mart, Target or Sam’s Club weekly. There are times when I don’t write a grocery list and times when I don’t remember what I purchased on the previous visit; therefore incorporating the grocery list would be a wonderful idea.
