Publisher Clearance House is a direct marketing company that sells merchandise and magazine subscriptions. The company use winners of the sweepstakes to promote their products.  I think this is a great idea because it makes people want to purchase their products in order to win prizes;

Several years ago I purchased a magazine or two from Publishers Clearing House because I saw the commercials and in hopes of winning a prize.  I now realize that I don’t know if the people are real winners or actors.
